In light of the activities of the “Sustainable Climate” campaign carried out by the Misr El Kheir Foundation in cooperation with many parties, a discussion session was held in the "Egypt Vision 2030 Corridor" under the title "The Green Economy as a Mechanism to Confront Climate Change and Achieve Sustainable Development"

The discussion panel addressed many important points related to climate, including the negative effects of climate change, in which Dr. Abaza explained the extent of the risks resulting from the effects of climate change on countries, which are due to countries adopting the traditional development patterns followed by developed countries, which most developing countries followed in their footsteps, which then proved their ineffectiveness in achieving sustainable, integrated and equitable development, as the prevailing development model depends on the production of goods and services through labor and capital, which results in... Wages and profits are used to purchase goods and services without taking into account the social and environmental dimensions, which has led to the depletion of the natural elements present in the environment.

Dr. Abaza added that countries are now in the direction of adopting policies to transition to the green economy, which launched its initiative by the United Nations Environment Program in October of 2008 to address the global financial and economic crisis that broke out at that time and which is still casting its shadow over the world. The initiative defined the green economy as “an economy that leads to an improvement in the state of well-being and social equity while at the same time taking care to significantly reduce environmental risks.”

Dr. Abaza also explained the advantages of transitioning to a green economy, including:

  • Creating good non-traditional investment areas.
  • Creating new decent job opportunities.
  • Increasing efficiency in the use of resources.
  • Increasing the competitiveness of national products in local, regional and global markets
  • Investing in human resources by improving the level of education, training and vocational training and spreading awareness and positive culture.
  • Improving health for various groups of people.

The standards of green projects were also highlighted, which are concentrated in:

  • Water and energy efficiency.
  • Percentage of reliance on new and renewable energy.
  • Percentage of recycled water use.
  • Procedures followed to reduce all sources of pollution resulting from the project.
  • Sustainable waste management systems of all types and extended producer responsibility.
  • Percentages of reducing the volume of waste and recycling production outputs, whether directly or in cooperation with other parties.
  • Sustainable management within the project, factory or facility.

His Excellency explained a number of details in each of the previous items.

At the end of the session, the door was opened for questions and inquiries for the participants to respond to, and some also presented their experiences and development ideas on the topic discussed in the session, in addition to a number of recommendations.

More than ninety participants participated in the session, in addition to followers, via live broadcast on the page of the NGO Capacity Building Unit affiliated with the Misr El Kheir Foundation.
